Registration:

  • Required to be completed and cleared to practice by LWHS Athletic Office
  • Blue Card (Spring), Gold Card (Fall) to be given to Coach Whaley prior to first practice
  • Information on registration process at:     https://www.kangfootball.com

Spring Practice - incoming Freshmen:

  • 6/10 - 6/15 @ 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM
  • Cleats, shorts, grey practice jersey with LW on front (player purchased)
  • Stock practice jersey issued to players who did not purchase their own

Fall Practice

  • Monday 8/19 - LW Athletic Office opens
  • Tuesday 8/20 – Mandatory Team Logistics Day
    • Freshmen meeting and equipment issue - 2 PM
  • Wednesday 8/21 – Training Camp begins

Training Camp:

  • August 21 – 31
  • 10 practice days earned toward 12 qualification days required (see WIAA below)

Regular Season Week:

  • Begins Monday September 2 (Labor Day)
  • 4 practices a week  / 1 game day

Regular Season:

  • Varsity 1st game – Friday September 6
  • JV 1st Game – Monday September 9
  • C Team 1st Game – Wednesday September 11

Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA):

Governing organization for all Washington State HS sports

WIAA Mandatory Completion of 12 Football Practice Days:

Players must complete 12 practice days to qualify to play in a WIAA sanction football game – multiple practices per day count as only 1 practice day 

Interruption of Practices – Beginning at 4 missed practice days in a row – the total days missed will be subtracted from the number of days previously practiced

(Ex: practice 5 days, miss next 4 practice days = 1 total net practice day credited toward completion of required 12).

WIAA & LWHS Sports Injury Policy

Players are required to be evaluated by the Athletic Trainer at time injury occurs.

Player’s injury will be assessed by the Athletic Trainer and parents contacted for further consultation.

Players who have additional treatment by a medical doctor (for Injury or Illness) must obtain a release letter from the doctor addressed to the Athletic Trainer, in order to be authorized to return to practice.

Player will not be allowed to return to practice w/o completion of steps above

WIAA:  If an athlete does not provide a clearance note from the medical provider, they are ineligible to participate.  If the athlete participates in a competition while ineligible, their team would need to forfeit that competition

Team Policies

LW Football Team membership is an earned privilege

Each player is held accountable to the Team, teammates, and coaches for all on and off the field conduct.

Academics is the # 1 priority above football

  • Grade checks begin in late September

Mandatory Practice Attendance:

Player makes season commitment to teammates, and coaches

Practice attendance recorded daily beginning 8/21.

Arrive 15 minutes early – required to be fully prepared when practice starts

  • Practice equipment and shoes on
  • If not ready - considered late
  • “Reminders” with a Varsity coach after practice that week

Excusable absences

  • Injury treatment, illness,  school work or function, family, employment, drivers’ ed., medical / dental, Head Coach Arena’s discretion, etc.
  • Prior to missed practice - the player is required to contact Head Coach Arena, Coach Whaley, or Coach Neirby with reason for miss.  Considered an unexcused absence if coach is not contacted prior to practice

Unexcused absences

  • 1st unexcused absence – meet  with Coach Whaley
  • 2nd unexcused absence – meet with Coach Arena, and/or Coach Neirby
  • 3rd unexcused absence – private meeting with Head Coach Arena
  • Three unexcused absences in a row – automatic suspension from the team

Player Football Equipment:        

Player safety is the absolute top priority at LWHS Football

LW player football equipment averages 8 seasons or newer

Players are individually measured and properly fitted per football equipment industry guidelines and training

Players sign for check out equipment

Players are financially responsible for any equipment not returned at the end of the season.Replacement cost fines are placed on players LW Student Account.

Players are responsible to purchase their own cleats, and integrated girdle.All players are required to wear an integrated girdle under their practice and game pants for contact protection. LW does not stock hip, thigh, and tail bone pads.

Team Summer Activities:    (Not mandatory but highly encouraged)

  • Kirkland 4th of July Parade
    • Football Team participates every year with LW Cheer and/or Dance
  • Strength & Conditioning  - M / T / Th / Fri
    • June 17 – June 21 @ 3 PM - 4:30 PM
    • June 24 - July 25 @ 9 AM - 10:30 AM
    • August 1 – August 16 @ 9 AM – 10:30 AM
  • Practice – helmets & jerseys only
    • Wed June 26 – July 24 @ 3:15 – 5:15PM
    • Coaches will have details for players
  • Camp Casey, Whidbey Island
    • July 29 – 31
    • Team building fun events & non-contact practices
  • Team Community Activities
    • Players will be notified, events will be posted on Team Schedule

  • Weekly player awards and game video highlights
  • Speakers from school, business, and local area sports
